Each year, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s features a colorful display of flowers, a Promise Garden. Participants choose the flower — orange, purple, yellow or blue — that represents their connection to the disease and their reason for walking. Together, the flowers create a garden of hope, as we honor, care and fight for people affected by Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
Now you can wear your Promise Garden flower all year long. Registered Walk participants who raise or donate $50 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s from November 30 to December 11 to receive a collectors series Promise Garden pin in the color of your choice. Collect all four pins by fundraising $150 dollars, while supplies last.
ORANGE: I support the cause and a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
The orange flowers represent participants like Imelda Flores, who walks to support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Imelda walks in honor of all the residents at the memory care community where she works and their families.
PURPLE: I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s.
The purple flowers represent people like Mike Larson who’s here today because he has lost someone to Alzheimer’s. He says, “I want to honor my mom and find a cure for Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. My hope is that one day soon, we’ll eradicate this disease, so that no one will ever have to go through what we did — ever again.”
YELLOW: I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.
The yellow flowers represent Walk participants like Jennifer Shreves. She walks because she is supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. Jennifer says, “This disease affects entire families, not just the person living with it. Our hope is that someday, there will be a cure. It might not help our family, but someday it will help someone’s family.”
BLUE: I have Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.
Blue flowers represent people like Minnie Roberts, who walks because she is living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Minnie has been living with the disease for three years. She holds her flower in honor of everyone who has been involved in her journey, including her sisters who are her caretakers, and in memory of her mother Essie.
