My Story

Grandma Mary always put others first with her job as a nurse, which she absolutely loved, or helping out in the community. When she retired, I thought she really deserved to do some of the travel and things she wanted to do after retirement. But when she got Alzheimer’s, it took away not only her ability to do those things but Grandpa’s as well because he became her full-time caregiver at the age of 80,” says Danielle.

Danielle shares a special bond with her grandparents. She wanted to make sure they could see her in her beautiful prom dress and had her date make an important pit stop to see them on the way to the dance.

Grandma Mary’s dedication to helping others inspired Danielle’s choice to go into nursing. Danielle shares her grandma’s kind heart in the work she does every day, helping patients. As a nurse, she has seen firsthand how this terrible disease not only affects her patients and their families but feels the weight of the disease as her own family navigates the journey with Alzheimer’s.

After Grandma Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the family turned to the Alzheimer’s Association for guidance and support. Because of the resources at the Alzheimer’s Association, Mary was able to remain at home, even through the COVID-19 pandemic. And when the time came for the inevitable move into a memory carry facility, nearly 9 years after her initial diagnosis, the family felt prepared.

Corgis for A Cure

Grandma Mary loves our corgi, Harrison, and we love her smile and laughter when he visits. That’s why we are supporting The Longest Day Corgi Ending Alzheimers at the Corgi races at Emerald Downs. We can talk about the joy our pup brings to someone we love very much living with Alzheimer’s and raise awareness and critical research funds so we can finally end this terrible disease,” says Danielle.
