I’m thrilled to see a regional blog for the Alzheimer’s Association. This format can be so very informative, but in a casual, easy-reading way. Thank you. Irene Olson, Redmond, Washington; http://www.babyboomersandmore.com
Feeling thankful and blessed to have a new Adult Day Health care program in the Snoqualmie Valley region of Washington state. Located in Carnation, WA about 30 miles east of Seattle, this care program called the OLD FRIENDS CLUB not only provides valuable socialization and cognitive engagement for family members challenged by Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases, they offer much needed respite for the growing number of unpaid caregivers in our communities. This non-profit low-cost service was pulled together by an amazing team of former staff of an Adult Day Health program administered by the Sno-Valley Senior Center. When the Senior Center was forced to close on August 31 due to lack of funding, family caregivers were left scrambling to fill the gap of care this loss presented. Staff members were clearly aware of the importance of such a program to the health of our community and within three weeks of closing the program at the Senior Center, they had another one up at running at a local church.
As a very grateful caregiver of my mom Dorthy who has been challenged by Alzheirmer’s for nearly 7 years, I am helping to promote two fundraising events for this program.
Since many family caregivers are justified in a little whining and wining, we have organized two wine & food events as fundraisers for OLD FRIENDS CLUB.
